Eugen Tomac

Secretary of state for the Romanians abroad
Eugen Tomac graduated in 2003 the Faculty of History – University of Bucharest. In 2005, he became a Masters postgraduate of the Faculty of History – University of Bucharest, specialising in “Mechanisms of denationalisation in the Soviet Union”. Currently, he is a PhD candidate at the same faculty.
During 2000-2004, he was president and founding member of the League of the Romanian Youth from Everywhere. He coordinated, during 2004-2006, the Romanian-American program “News to Know – introducing democratic media to schools in Romania” implemented with the support of the U.S. State Department. Since 2007 he is the director of the Centre for Democratic Education, a nongovernmental organization that promotes human rights and democratic principles in the South-East Europe.
Eugen Tomac is the coordinator of the collection LEX – românii de lângă noi: “Comunităţi româneşti – drepturi şi norme universale” (LEX – the Romanians by our side: “Romanian Communities – rights and universal rules”), which is a legal guide that includes universal and European laws on the protection of minorities and on contending ethnic discrimination, and of the book ”Focus on Romanians”.
During 2002 – 2008, he was editor of the history journal, Magazin Istoric (”Historical Magazine”) and in 2007-2008 he was a journalist for Radio Romania Cultural.
In January 2007, he represented Romania in the “International Visitor Leadership Program”, organised by the U.S. State Department.
In 2006, he was appointed official for the relation with Romanians from abroad in the Presidential Administration, position held until January 2009.
During 2006-2008, he taught the history of Romanians at the Institute for Romanians from Everywhere “Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi” to Romanian students from the neighbouring countries.
In November 2008, he was a candidate in the parliamentary elections in constituency no. 43 for the Romanians in the Diaspora, 2nd College, running as deputy in the Parliament.
In January 2009, he was appointed as Secretary of State for the Relation with Romanians Abroad in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Following the establishment of the Department for Romanians Abroad, institution with legal personality within the direct coordination of the Prime Minister, he is appointed as secretary of state for Romanians Abroad on January 26, 2010.
